Good morning campers!
The weather is warm, there's been little rain.
Your first task this morning is to discover food safety.
As campers, we take our food with us into the wilderness. There are many ways to cook it.
Can you name at least five?
Go to http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Barbecue_Food_Safety/index.asp
What temperature does a hamburger need to get to before you can eat it?
What about a chicken breast?
What else do we need to know about transporting our food to the campsite before we cook it?

Go to:
http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/advancementandawards/meritbadges/mb-COOK.aspx
Read it over and let's do number 3. Plan our meals for two days. What will we need?
Can't think of a recipe? Go to: www.recipelink.com
Search for Camping.
Look at all the recipes! What kind of cookwear will we need?
Utensils? Copy and paste the recipes you wish to make on your camp out in your word document. Then make a list of all the items we need to take along.
Whew! Your list is getting long.
When you are done, print it and staple it to take home.

We are playing a game outside today and then having a camp snack.
Thank you for coming to Camping Fun this year at summer school. I hope you had
fun and learned some new things to help you have a safe and fun time while you camp.
Take care,
Mrs. Knutson

Wow. That was quite a storm last night!
What would you have done if you were camping in a storm like we had last night?
Go to:
http://www.campfish.net/lightening-safety.php

Lets talk about what you would do.

Now go to:
http://www.smokeybear.com
How many wildfires are burning right now? How many are caused by nature and lightning and how many be humans?

Have you ever taken a sleeping bag out of the package and unrolled it, but then can't get it back to the original size? Today I am going to show you a solution.

Have a great day at summer school.

Good Morning Campers!
Today is a great day for camping!
When we camp, we can do lots of fun activities. One of them is fishing.
Maybe some of you have never been fishing. There are lots of lakes and streams in Wisconsin and lots of kinds of fish.

http://www.fws.gov/fisheries/
http://www.dnr.wi.gov/fish/

Look on the internet and see how many there really are!
Put them into your list of camping.

Next, we should talk about fire.
Go to: http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/teachingleavenotrace/035_minimize.aspx
Check out the proper way to create and extinguish a camp fire.

About 9:15 we are going to the park for some fun.
Have a great day at summer school.

Good Morning Campers!
It is a beautiful day and I hope you are all enjoying the summer so far.
We have covered a lot of topics during our time together, but we have not yet talked about planning for the unexpected.
What about an accident! A fall, a cut, a broken ankle.
What items would you want to take in your backpack for an emergency?
Open your Word document and make some notes on what you would want to take.
http://www.redcross.org/ has lots of information. http://kidshealth.org/parent/firstaid_safe/home/firstaid_kit.html is another good source.
Let's talk about what you included in your list.

Our recipe list is pretty short. Now let's check out the internet for great camping recipes.http://www.scouting.org/ has some camping recipes.
See if you can find them.http://www.girlscouts.org has some but are harder to find. When you do find one you like, copy and paste it into your Word document.

If we have time, work on your Webranger activities.
We have quite a snack today, fit for camping so we need extra time.
We will start around 9:30.
Have a great day at summer school!

Thursday, June 19

Today, we are learning about plants and creatures in the woods that we need to be careful of.
First you need to look for a picture on the internet of a deer tick.
www.mos.org/sln/sem/tick.html has a really gross magnification of one! YUCK!
Listen while Mrs. Knutson reads some information about Lyme's Disease.

Next, find a picture of poison ivy and poison sumac.
http://www.poison-ivy.org/
http://www.poison-sumac.org/

Now see if you can find some pictures of what these do to your skin! YIKES!
So let's try to stay away from both plants and those tiny ticks.

It's a beautiful day outside, so let's go for a hike. You can leave any items here, we will be back.

Have a great hike!

Good Morning Campers!
The brainy question of the day is:
What do the Wall Street Journal and the foil paper cloth in the plastic bag in the classroom have in common?

Today is a great day for camping.

We are going to start out by learning to put up the tents in groups. We will break into small groups and we will head outside as soon as you have answered the question. After we have constructed all the tents and taken them down again, we are going to play a fun camping game outside as well.
Have a great time at summer school today!

Good Morning Campers!
Today we will be visiting a National Park.
There are several of them, but we are going to visit on-line.
Go to: http://www.nps.gov/webrangers/
Login with your name and create a password.
Then fill in the boxes and put your Secret question answer in.
Follow the directions including putting your name on your badge and print it.Move through the activities and the scavenger hunt!
Have fun visiting the National Parks and learning about the emblem. Go through all the Ranger Stations of "Historic", "City", "Wilderness". Once you get through all the activities, click on the Scavenger Hunt at the top and test yourself. You may have to go through some more activities to get the right answers. If you don't finish today, we can come back later.....remember your login and password!
We also need to learn about the trees that we will find in the National Park systems. I have a handout for you and then we are going outside to look around and see if we can name some of them!
Look at the map, how many National Forests do we have in Wisconsin?
Have a great camping day!
